What Is Intuitive Massage and Why Can It Never Be the Same for Everyone?

There are days when the body wants deep touch and others when it needs slowness, silence and space, days when we arrive with a precise tension and others when we simply feel tired, full and distant from ourselves
Yet many massages are still created as identical sequences, a series of predetermined movements applied in the same order regardless of the person lying on the table
Intuitive massage begins with a different question
What does this body need today?
Not last week, not in general and not according to a protocol designed for everyone, but today, in this moment, with the story, breathing and sensitivity the person brings with them
Intuitive does not mean improvised
When I use the word intuitive, I do not mean a random treatment without technique
Intuition does not replace knowledge of the body, experience, listening or professional boundaries, it works alongside them
During a session I observe the breath, the way the body rests on the table, the areas asking for more space and those reacting immediately to contact
I listen to the quality of the tissues, temperature, tension, the person’s ability to release their weight and the small signals through which the body says yes, no or not yet
The treatment is created through the meeting between what I know how to do and what the person communicates, even without words
This is why two massages will never be completely identical, even when they are received by the same person
The body is constantly changing
The body is not a fixed structure
It changes according to sleep, stress, hormonal cycles, work, emotions, physical activity, relationships and even the season
Pressure that feels pleasant one day may feel excessive at another moment
An area that usually requires attention may not be the centre of today’s treatment
We may arrive thinking we need strong work around the shoulders and discover that the body can only soften when the feet, abdomen or breathing are given attention
Intuitive massage does not decide in advance how the body should relax
It allows the body to reveal its own way
Does massage have to hurt to work?
The belief that an effective massage must hurt is still very common
There are certainly moments when intense pressure can be useful and enjoyable, especially for people who want more decisive muscular work, but pain and effectiveness are not the same thing
When the body experiences touch as excessive, it may tighten, hold the breath and increase its defences
The person may remain silent because they believe the pain is necessary, while the nervous system is doing the exact opposite of relaxing
Deep touch works when the body is able to receive it
Not when it is forced to tolerate it
In intuitive massage, intensity is not excluded, it is adapted, observed and continuously negotiated through breathing and the body’s reactions
The role of the nervous system
When we remain under stress for a long time, the body may forget how to return to rest
Even when we finally stop, part of us continues to control, anticipate and hold
We may feel exhausted but unable to sleep, desire a massage but struggle to let go, need to slow down and still feel uncomfortable when everything becomes quiet
Intuitive massage can create an experience of safety through steady, predictable and respectful contact
It does not order the body to relax
It offers the conditions in which relaxation may become possible
Sometimes this happens through flowing and enveloping movements, other times through steady pressure, foot work, gentle mobilisation, sound or simply through a hand remaining present long enough for the body to understand that it does not need to react immediately
When emotions enter the massage
The body and emotions do not live in separate worlds
When we worry, our breathing changes, when we are afraid, we become tense, when we are angry, we may clench the jaw or hands and when we are sad, the chest may feel heavier
This does not mean that every tension has an emotional cause or that a person’s story can be read by observing one muscle
It does mean that when the body slows down, what we have been holding may become easier to notice
During a massage, some people feel deep calm, others become emotional, remember something or suddenly understand how tired they have been
Others simply fall asleep, which can sometimes be the wisest available response
There is no correct reaction
My work is not to interpret every tear, shiver or sensation, but to create a space in which what emerges can be received without becoming a performance or a diagnosis
Consent is not a formality
Consent remains central from the beginning to the end of an intuitive massage
You can ask for lighter or stronger pressure, indicate an area you do not want touched, change position, request a blanket, speak or choose silence
You can also change your mind during the treatment
Agreeing to a certain type of contact at the beginning does not mean having to accept it throughout the entire session
The practitioner’s intuition is never more important than the perception of the person receiving the treatment
A truly intuitive massage does not impose an interpretation on the body
It listens to it
The Signature and Darshan, two different ways of returning to the body
At marilü, intuitive massage can take different forms
The Signature brings together my experience in massage, energy work and body awareness, creating a session around the person and the present moment for those who wish to slow down, release tension and return to their centre
Darshan is a longer and deeper experience in which touch also becomes presence, observation and a space for transformation, particularly suited to those who need time to leave the outside world at the door and truly return to themselves
There is no treatment that is always better
There is the treatment that responds more closely to what you are living now
Who may benefit from intuitive massage?
It may be right for you when you feel physically tense, overstimulated, tired but unable to rest, when you feel you live mainly in your head or when you want a treatment that does not make you feel like another person inside a standard sequence
It can accompany a period of change, support a need for grounding or simply offer a moment of care
You do not have to arrive in crisis
The body does not need to break before it deserves attention
What intuitive massage cannot do
Intuitive massage does not replace a doctor, physiotherapy, psychotherapy or medical evaluation
It cannot diagnose the cause of pain, treat significant injuries or promise the permanent release of trauma
In the presence of sudden or unexplained pain, fever, inflammation, recent trauma, neurological symptoms or other medical conditions, it is important to consult a healthcare professional and confirm that massage is appropriate
Holistic work becomes trustworthy when it also knows its limitations
Returning to the body without trying to fix it
Receiving a massage does not necessarily mean that something is wrong and needs to be corrected
Sometimes it simply means recognising that the body has carried a great deal and deserves a place where it does not have to continue holding everything
Intuitive massage does not try to turn the body into a more efficient machine
It tries to create a meeting
Between the body you have today and the listening it may have been missing
Between tension and the possibility of not holding all of it
Between everything you constantly do for others and a moment in which you can finally receive
At marilü in Bern, every session begins here
Not with a fixed formula, but with the person who enters
Do you feel that your body needs to slow down, find more space or receive a treatment truly created around you?
